Reading Conference Wonders

There is nothing like the excitement of hearing what others are doing to get kids reading.  Two and a half days of inspiring, fascinating, creative people have me revved up and ready to get back to school and try out some of the ideas I heard during the Virginia State Reading Association conference this week in Richmond.  I was lucky enough to meet Jeff Kinney!!!
Yes, this really is Jeff Kinney's hand signing a book for Highland Park Elementary!

Wow!  I met Jarrett Krosoczka!!

I got to hear how the lunch lady was created WHILE eating breakfast with Donalyn Miller!
And I finally heard how Batman REALLY came to be from author Marc Tyler Nobleman.

The entire conference reinforced my passion for reading and getting kids to open a book.
Reading is Life.

  2. Nice to hear about your great experience at the Conference. Is it geared toward teachers of younger students?

    1. No it had sessions that would have applied to anyone, but as an elementary person, I probably gravitated more towards those sessions.

  4. Lorelie, you have a contagious love of books. I am sure that your students appreciate that love of literature. Do you encourage your students to visit this site, or is it for teachers? I think you did a great job with the visual presentations of the front of the books and the short commentaries. Fantastic job!

  7. One of my former students, who was my yearbook editor for two years, went on to start her own reviewing site for YA books. It became quite popular and she began to be courted by publishing companies, going to conventions and getting free advance copies. She's now working my dream job, editing fiction for a publishing company in North Carolina. She gets to work from home. I'm as proud of her as I am jealous.

  8. I like your positive slant toward books and reading. At my school, many of the teachers have laminated posters on their doors with our pictures on them. We either write what we are reading or make a running tally of what we have read this school year. I do the list, and it is interesting how many kids read the posters and ask questions about titles. For instance, I read a lot of non-fiction, so many do not know the books or are that familiar with the genre for that matter.
