Last night my daughter and I finished reading Lisa Yee's Warp Speed. This
was a fantastic story to read together. The story is wonderful for learning to be
who you want to be. The Star Wars and Star Trek references were awesome
as I have to admit to being something of a Trekkie myself growing up. (My
brother made sure of that!) So my daughter and I began to watch some of
those early Star Trek episodes and the Star Wars I grew up on to give her
some reference of what Marley was talking about. We watched Casablanca
so my daughter understand the reference to Victor Lazlo. We loved reading this book
and could not wait for the next evening to find out what the Captain's Log would
offer. GREAT book! And I can't say enough about reading together. These are moments
we both will remember and cherish!
My kids are all grown and I miss those moments of reading to them.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this review. I once saw Lisa Yee speak at an SCBWI event and she was very inspiring. I just recently read Harriet the Spy to my daughter (in 4th grade; she reads to herself mostly but we did this over the past few weeks), and it was such a special treat. It's also interesting to revisit a favorite book from my youth from the perspective of an adult.
ReplyDeleteI loved Warp Speed and I'm glad to find a fellow lover.
ReplyDeleteHave you read The Cheshire Cheese Cat - A Dickens of a Tale. I would love to know what your daughter thinks of this one. I picked it up at the library last week and, as far as I can see, I am the first person to check it out.
I loved the Chesire Cheese Cat! My daughter read it as well. She thought it was "good" but other than the Warrior books she hasn't been too in to animal tales.
DeleteThis has been very popular with my Star Wars fans and my cross country runners... wait, why do these groups so frequently overlap? Food for thought.
ReplyDeleteI miss having little ones to read to, but happy day, the grandchildren and my niece are visiting today. Thanks for a great suggestion. I could see my son in-law reading this to his oldest.
ReplyDeleteHas she read the Origami Yoda books? My fifth grader really enjoyed them, and they obviously have a lot of Star Wars references. My kids are better at seeing stuff from the first three movies, since I tend to only remember the originals.
ReplyDeleteYes! We read Origami Yoda but haven't read Darth Paper yet! Can't wait. Now that they are re-releasing the Star Wars movies in 3D my daughter is soooo excited! I'm happy to see my nerdyness rubbing off in a good way on at least one of my kids!
DeleteI love Lisa Yee and haven't read this one yet. Sounds great!

Lisa Yee is great - I haven't read this one - thanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteSome of the best moments I remember from my childrens' childhood were moments of shared reading. I shall have to find this book!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fun read! My girls are adults now, but oh how we loved those read-together times =)
ReplyDeleteA story with both STAR WARS and STAR TREK references? Must be fun for young readers!
ReplyDeleteI think I could get my husband to read this book! We took our 1-year-old to a Star Trek convention last fall. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for letting us know.

Thanks for the reminder on this book. My daughter is the right age for it now, not an inspired reader, but loves Star Wars and Star Trek. Great suggestion!
ReplyDeleteI'll have to remember this when my kid gets a bit older. Thanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great book to share. Thanks for the recommendation. I, too, am a Trekkie, although not a serious one who wears costumes and make up at conventions. Glad I stopped by.
ReplyDeleteBill Kirk (aka Captain Kirk when I was actually a Captain in the Air Force in another life).
